The Dutch ace was frustrated at not getting a free-kick when Rovers were beating the Double winners, and in a moment of madness he kicked and stamped on Nils, who was lying on the floor.

The ref didn’t notice, but the FA have said they want videos of the incident.

“I deserved a free kick but didn’t get one from the ref,” Bergkamp told Dutch telly.

“It probably looked worse on television than it actually was. It was not that big a deal.

“It wasn’t frustration that we were losing, but frustration that I didn’t get the free kick,” he added.

Not a convincing defence, Dennis.

Bergkamp has already been rapped by the FA for stamping when earlier this year he got sent off for attacking Liverpool’s Jamie Carragher.
