The 32-year-old is being watched closely by the powers that be at Ewood where he has been trying to prove he has fully recovered from a knee injury he picked up when at Portsmouth.
"What we need to find out is if the knee can stand up to the medical," Allardyce told BBC Radio Lancashire.
"We know what he can do on the field of play which is reassuring."
