Rovers relieved Paul Ince of his duties on Tuesday and Allardyce is the choice of John Williams and co to try and get the team out of trouble at the bottom of the Premier league.

Former Blackburn boss Graeme Souness was the bookmakers' favourite but he ruled himself out of the running this morning, but by then talks were already well underway with Big Sam.

Allardyce has signed a three-year deal and returns to management for the first time since his departure from Newcastle.

The club have issued a brief statement stating that a press conference will take place on Thursday afternoon.
