The Croatian has only just got his work permit and he trained with his new team mates for the first time on Monday, he has missed most of pre season and needs bringing up to full fitness.
But there will be no rushing the player into Premiership football.
"Kalinic will probably play at Gillingham at the earliest," Allardyce told the Lancashire Telegraph.
"We will have a look at him and bring him on slowly."
