Disappointment for Rovers Pair...

Believing he had a very good chance of being in Eriksson's squad, Jansen was surprised by yesterday's omission. "Obviously, I am very disappointed in view of the speculation about me being in the squad," said Jansen. "I am just going to go and work hard for my club and hopefully I will break into the side next season."

Eriksson offered little by explanation yesterday: "I went to Anfield to look not only at Jansen". However, Eriksson and his management team should examine the internal situation which saw Jansen's hopes built up by senior figures within the game.

Andy Cole also failed to feature in Eriksson's squad. He promptly announced his international retirement.

"That's me finished England-wise now," he said.

"I have made my mind up. As far as I concerned there is no way back for me. My time has come now."

When asked to comment on Cole's failure to make it to the England squad, Sven said: "I feel sorry for Andy Cole. I do. Who knows? In life, you could always change your mind."
