England Calls for Thompson

Last updated : 07 October 2002 By Matt

Currently uncapped midfielder

David Thompson
has been given an unexpected England call-up.

The move comes after West Ham's Trevor Sinclair had to pull out because of an injury sustained during West Ham's 2-1 home defeat by Birmingham City. Lee Bowyer was expected to take his place though it would appear that Thompson has somehow pipped him to the post.

Thompson will now be present for the European championship qualifiers against Slovakia and Macedonia.

When asked to comment on the call up, Eriksson said: "David has been impressive over the last few weeks and I have seen him play on a couple of occasions.

"I am now looking forward to working with him for these two important games."
