The American has recently lost his place in Villas-Boas' side to French number one Hugo Lloris who joined the club from Lyon this summer.
Friedel lost his place in the recent game against Aston Villa in October which ended the 41-year-old’s record of 310 consecutive Premier League starts for Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Spurs.
Now he is being linked with a move back up north to Blackburn where he could join up with former team mate Henning Berg as a player/coach.
