And the Rovers boss once again singled out Benni McCarthy for special praise after his two penalties sealed the win against Sam Allardyce's side.

"The value that we have got from Benni is certainly more than the £2.5million that we paid for him," said the Rovers boss.

"He's had a great season and I thought he was excellent again today.

"I thought that his movement and his willingness to get the job done for the team was first-class.

"He's been out of the team for a couple of games because I felt that he needed a break, but today he looked fresh and full of running and I'm delighted he got the two goals. That's three in a week now."

Hughes went on to admit that he was a bit twitchy when Anelka grabbed what proved to be just an 88th minute consolation goal for the home side.

"With a few minutes to go you worry that the game might slip away, but in the end we got what we deserved today," he added.

"We were the better team."
