Souey blasts Dwight

Rovers were 2-0 up at Maine Road, beating the Man City side which haven’t lost at home in ages.

Ten minutes to go and we’re on the coach back home singing happy songs with a much needed three points.

Or so it should have been.
Cole megs Schmeichel to put Rovers two up

A well worked first goal by David Thompson, and a cheeky nutmeg by Andy Cole on old buddy Schmeichel had set us up for a victory.

But what happened then? I couldn’t honestly tell you.

Despite City’s 31,000 fans to our 3,000, Rovers were the more vocal throughout. But, as the City fans warned us, “feed ‘the Goat’ and he will score.”
We had masses of possession and shots on target, but we crumbled and let Nicolas Anelka score and Shaun Goater equalise in the dying minutes of the game.

“Their two goals were avoidable,” Souey moaned.

“If Dwight Yorke could run the extra five yards on their free kick… The vast majority of my players give me 110% every time they go out there, but one or two do not and that is why we have drawn.

“When you are 2-0 up with 15 minutes to go against ten men, you should keep the ball. Everyone needed to dig in and hold on but we did not do that.

“I could not begin to describe my frustration. You talk to footballers, you have team meetings and you think some of the players know something about the game but after that I’m not so sure.”
