Souness: Team not at their best...

Still, he was said to be "happy" that they came away with a point.

Whilst the first 10 minutes of play were good, things dwindled for the rest of the first half. Things picked up after the interval but neither Blackburn or Villa could manage to end the 0-0 deadlock. The game finished in a goalless stalemate.

Souness admitted that his side weren't quite up to scratch and blamed the below-average performance on the Uefa Cup clash with Celtic on Thursday.

He told the press: "We weren't at it in the first half. We started well in the first 10 minutes but they got us involved in something we didn't want to be involved in.

"We improved second half but too many of our lads were not at their best.

"But I can't be critical of the lads because tiredness affects people in different ways and we were missing that edge, which is understandable. That's the Uefa Cup, playing it on a Thursday.

"We did have a number of chances in the second half and had they gone in, it would have been a different game, but I think I have to be happy with a point because I've seen us lose games like that in the past."

Rovers are set to go up against Walsall on Tuesday but Souness is expected to keep many of the first team players off the pitch to allow them time to rest for next Saturday's game at Southampton.
