He was delighted with the win as he thought it was a team performance which fully deserved the three points.

Midweek confrontations on the training ground did not appear to have had any adverse effect on Blackburn.

In fact, it was just the opposite as they surprisingly dominated Villa in the gale force winds which left Blackburn's train travelling fans stranded as all trains were cancelled from the nearby Witton station.

They responded to manager Graeme Souness's call for a solid team effort and there was an immediate response against an inconsistent Villa side which struggled to recapture their good form.

It was only Blackburn's second win in ten games, while Villa suffered their second reverse in three matches to suffer a severe knock to their European aspirations in a match which highlighted their limited resources.

Ronny Johnsen was an absentee from Villa's side because his wife had gone into labour. This enabled England Under-21 international Liam Ridgwell to make his first start in the Premiership, but he did not have a very happy time against the Blackburn attack.

But it was Blackburn who were always the more positive and this was reflected in their general play against a Villa side which was sadly off key.

Not even the appearance of Villa fan, Jim Lewis, owner of Best Mate, with the Gold Cup could not inspire the Midlands club to make a comeback.

Blackburn resolutely defended their well merited two goals interval lead despite some dangerous Villa raids inspired by the industrious Thomas Hitzlsperger.

The only early danger to Rovers occurred when Martin Andresen made a poor back pass to goalkeeper, Thomas Sorensen, which very nearly let in Juan Pablo Angel.

Fortunately for Blackburn on-loan Andresen was more accurate when he was in sight of Villa's goal.

The former Wimbledon player created the opening for Blackburn's first goal with a smart forward pass to skipper Flitcroft who momentarily deceived Olof Mellberg.

The ball dropped to the feet of the Blackburn skipper to coolly slot a close-range shot past Thomas Sorensen to the total dismay of the Villa fans.

This goal resulted in out of sorts Barry making way for Peter Whittingham but it was to no avail as Blackburn were ell in control.

They demonstrated their fresh confidence when recent £1million signing Jon Stead notched his third goal in four games since his arrival from Huddersfield.

Andresen took a corner on the right which was flicked on to the waiting Stead to pick his spot with an accurate right-foot shot low to the left of Sorensen.

The game took another turn for the worse for Villa a couple of minutes before half time when Solano suddenly pulled up with a hamstring injury which prevented him resuming in the second half and will also prevent him playing for Peru next week.

He was replaced by the talented Luke Moore but Blackburn were in no mood to relax their grip as Stead demonstrated in the 46th minute forcing Sorensen to make a desperate save.

The goal attempt was set up by Andy Cole who certainly played with a more positive attitude which in no small way assisted the promising performance of Stead.

In reply Villa hit back with a raid from Lee Hendrie. He found Whittingham at the near post. The Villa youngster turned smartly and shot but straight at Brad Friedel.

Villa's impatience with their lack of goals created some untidy play in the closing stages of the game.

Only the conditions prevented Cole adding to Villa's woe when the former England striker blasted a shot over the bar. But he had performed well and must have pleased his hard task-master, Souness.

Man of the Match: Martin Andresen – Gave a busy display in midfield for Rovers and was at the heart of the visitors' best efforts.
