Both teams needed the points from this match to stave off the threat of relegation but it was Blackburn that finished up looking more like relegation fodder than David O'Leary's men.

After wave after wave of attacks had finished with no reward, further indecision in the Blackburn defence allowed Stefan Moore to open the scoring on 68 minutes and Juan Pablo Angel sealed the points shortly afterwards.

Villa's first away win of the season was hardly made difficult for them thanks to an insipid performance from their opponents that will leave boss Graeme Souness tearing his hair out with anger.

Rovers barely registered a shot on target as the spirited and hardworking Aston Villa side easily controlled this match.

Indeed, if Lee Hendrie and Angel had accepted good chances in the first half, this scoreline could have made even more painful reading for Blackburn fans.

The goals that decided it came in quick succession midway through the second half. There appeared little danger when Angel flicked on a deep free-kick but left-back Vratislav Gresko was terrible slow to react and in nipped Hendrie to nod a cross into the path of Moore, who scored.

Villa sub Darius Vassell went close on 73 minutes when Brad Friedel somehow kept out his three-yard effort out but from a similar area the keeper was beaten less than 60 seconds later.

J Lloyd Samuel burst down the left and delivered a fast low cross to the near post and the in-form Angel nipped in front of his marker to tap beyond Friedel.

Rovers meekly accepted the result without so much as threatening the imperious Olof Mellberg and Dion Dublin at the back. On this evidence, it is going to be a long, hard winter for the Lancashire outfit but Villa are on the up.

Souness was understandably upset with his team's performance saying: "It is a miserable day for everyone connected with this football club." His opposite number O'Leary commented: "I'm delighted. We created lots of chances and turned our possession into goals. It could be a turning point in our season - only time will tell."
