Blackburn Rovers 2 Liverpool 2

A pulsating game in front of the television cameras ended all square as Liverpool came from behind to rescue a point.

In a frantic finale both sides went desperately close to snatching victory but in the end the two teams had to settle for one point each.

The Blackburn fans must have feared the worst when, in only the seventh minute, John Arne Riise found acres of space on the edge of the box to drill a low left-footer past a flat-footed Brad Friedel.

But, Mark Hughes' side showed tremendous character to bounce back almost immediately, Jay Bothroyd turning home man-of-the-match Brett Emerton's low centre just nine minutes later.

Liverpool's Djibril Cisse was carried from the field with a suspected broken leg after an innocuous looking challenge with James McEveley.

The Reds were thrown by Cisse's exit and found themselves behind at the break as Emerton coolly stroked Blackburn's second goal in first-half stoppage time.

Sadly for Rovers, whose performance belied their lowly position at the foot of the table, the lead was not to last as McEveley gave away possession and Milan Baros raced through to slot home a 53rd minute leveller.

However, Rovers manager Mark Hughes was delighted with his side's performance, particularly as it came after two crushing 4-0 defeats.

He said afterwards: "I thought we were excellent from start to finish. It was important to get the right response from the players after the last two results.

"We had to make a statement tonight and I think we did that." Blackburn could feel a little hard done by not to have won the game, as a great display from visiting keeper Chris Kirkland prevented them from nicking a much-needed victory.

In the 73rd minute substitute Jonathan Stead span away from the attentions of both Jamie Carragher and Josemi before unleashing a terrific drive that Kirkland tipped over the bar.

Shortly afterwards Emerton swung in a corner from the right that centre-back Craig Short met with a towering header only for Kirkland to somehow kick his effort off the line.

And then, Barry Ferguson's cute free-kick took the Reds defence by surprise. Lucas Neill crossed low and Paul Dickov seemed a certain scorer but again Kirkland blocked from point-blank range.

Liverpool also had their chances. Even before the first goal Cisse sizzled the fingers of Friedel with a rasping drive from distance while in the 33rd minute Baros took advantage of Nils-Eric Johansson's slip to again sting the palms of Friedel.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez threw on Harry Kewell midway through the second half for Steve Finnan and the Australian went close with a whipped curling shot that Friedel grasped at the second attempt.

And in the last five minutes the ball came to Riise again on the left. He cut past Neill and shot for goal but Friedel was a towering presence in his way.

Benitez refused to comment on the injury to star striker Cisse preferring to concentrate on his side's performance.

"We played a high tempo game for much of today and controlled the match in parts," he said. "We had many opportunities so of course I am disappointed but we need to concentrate more as all balls into our box are dangerous." MAN OF THE MATCH: Brett Emerton (Blackburn) - The Aussie midfielder produced one of his best displays in a Rovers shirt scoring one goal and creating the other.
